In March 2018, Wang Lei was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer, the “king of cancer”. Before this, he had been deeply engaged in the field of digestive tract tumors for more than 20 years.
He is kind-hearted and devoted himself to the medical career, and has been committed to the clinical and translational research of colorectal cancer and radioactive enteritis for a long time. The achievements he has achieved are related to improving the quality of life of patients, and has achieved remarkable results in medical teaching and research fields.
The radioactive enteritis diagnosis and treatment team led by him manages the largest radioactive enteritis diagnosis and treatment center in China. The original new surgery for the expansion of the left hemiplegia of rectal cancer – the “Tianhe surgery” has attracted great attention from the medical community.

On April 1, 2018, Wang Lei lies under the shadowless lamp that he is most familiar with and underwent more than ten hours of surgery. His spleen, 80% of the pancreas, most of the stomach, and the nerves that control the intestine were removed on a large scale. Although the operation was successful, he lost the ability to eat independently and needed nutritional needles to maintain his life. The results of the controlled research on neoadjuvant treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer submitted to the General Assembly are of great value to the treatment guidelines for advanced rectal cancer in countries around the world.
The annual ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology) annual meeting is recognized as the most important academic conference in the world. Last year, Wang Lei, who was already ill, attended the annual meeting and his hair fell out due to chemotherapy.
I once arrived at the office before 7 o’clock every day

The pursuit of scientific research has kept Wang Lei in a state of “knowledge hunger”. In September 2001, Wang Lei applied to go to the world’s top cancer hospital, the MD Anderson Cancer Center, USA, to study postdoctoral research in the field of digestive tract tumors from Cinema in the Department of Molecular Pathology.

In 2016, Zhongshan Sixth Hospital was rated as a Grade A Hospital, and its gastrointestinal and anal surgery department then became the leader in the field of colorectal and anal diseases diagnosis and treatment in China, and other comprehensive disciplines are also booming.

Many achievements improve the quality of life of patients

Wang Lei established sexual function protection surgery technology to reduce the incidence of sexual dysfunction after rectal cancer from 70% to 15%; the treatment of patients with middle and advanced rectal cancer was generally referred to the US NCCN guidelines, and preoperative synchronous chemotherapy was performed before surgical resection to establish a pure neoadjuvant chemotherapy plan. After surgery, many patients are prone to radioactive damage and poor quality of life. He successfully established a new preoperative treatment plan for “simple and full-quantity chemotherapy” to radiotherapy. The US NCCN guidelines quoted this research result.
For patients who have received radiotherapy, Professor Wang Lei established a unique surgical procedure – proximal enlarged resection of rectal cancer, and named it “Tianhe surgical procedure” after Tianhe District where Zhongshan Sixth Hospital is located. Tianhe surgery reduces the incidence of anastomosis-related complications, reduces the chance of anastomosis fistula in patients and improves quality of life.
In order to further improve the quality of postoperative survival of cancer patients, Wang Lei focused his research on relatively unpopular radioactive enteritis. The incidence of radioactive enteritis in pelvic radiotherapy is as high as about 20%, among which hemorrhagic radioprotic inflammation is coming fiercely and recursively, and the patient is suffering and very painful. A few patients end their pain by suicide.
Wang Lei’s team summarized the classification treatment plan for hemorrhagic radioactive enteritis (i.e., the three technologies for the treatment of radioactive enteritis) to solve the problems for these suffering patients.
Work, wife and children, ideals… He Komiks has too many things that he can’t let go
Once, Wang Lei had too many things that he could “can’t let go”.
Wang Lei once posted a notice of “No visit” in front of his ward – he never wanted to show it to others as a patient, and he was even more unwilling to inform his relatives and friends about his condition or show his pain.
In March last year, Wang Lei learned about the teacher’s condition from all over the country and askedDuring the visit, some students even came to the hospital by plane or high-speed rail. Wang Lei refused to visit at that time, and the text under his hand book was like this: “I don’t need comfort. At this moment, I don’t treat myself as a patient. I treat pancreatic cancer as a friend in my body. In the ward, Wang Lei once revealed his feelings about Babaylan—In the past 27 years of career, he has devoted all his efforts to his medical career and has owed much to his wife and children. Since he got sick, he began to think about the meaning of life and everything around him. He longs to live one more day, spend more time with his family, and make up for his debts to his wife.
Babaylan In the past 15 months, Wang Lei’s wife has accompanied him day and night. They took a walk, went to the park together, and went to buy vegetables together. They held hands and felt the daily life carefully. More than the previous 25 years have been with each other.
”Can’t let go” also comes from a lifetime of medical ideals. Wang Lei once admitted that the scientific research on radioactive enteritis has been going through more than ten years, and the team has silently persevered and made efforts. Last year, it was awarded the first prize of the Guangdong Science and Technology Progress Award. Scientific research is at the critical point. He does not want his condition to affect the progress of the entire team. “The clinical field has been cultivated and mature, and scientific research still needs to be guided by professors. I don’t want the students to have emotional fluctuations as soon as I leave, which will affect the research.”
Before his death, Wang Lei was interviewed by a reporter. He said that life is like a journey, and he is ready to be the passenger who gets off early.
