I went to the office before 7 o’clock every day
In 1969, Wang Lei was born in a medical family in Henan. His parents and grandfather were both famous doctors in the county. The home he grew up with was less than 50 meters away from the hospital operating room. Seeing his father, who was a surgeon, save lives, Wang Lei set his future goals in his heart.
In 1987, Wang Lei applied to the Department of Clinical Medicine at Zhengzhou University. Although he was later transferred to the major of oral medicine, he never gave up his ideal of becoming a surgeon.
At the end of 1995, Wang Lei and his newlywed wife went south to Guangzhou, first at the affiliated doctor of Jinan University. The hospital further studied general surgery, and later passed the master’s degree at Sun Yat-sen Medical University, becoming a student of Wang Jianping, a leader in colorectal surgery in China and the first dean of Zhongshan Sixth Hospital. After graduation, he stayed at the school to work in the Department of Gastroenterology Surgery of Sun Yat-sen University. In 2000, Wang Lei studied for a Ph.D.
The pursuit of scientific research has kept Wang Lei in a state of “knowledge hunger”. In September 2001, Wang Lei applied to go to the world’s top oncology hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and was engaged in postdoctoral research in the field of gastrointestinal tumors in the Department of Molecular Pathology.
After returning from the American postdoctoral research, Wang Lei and more than 30 colleagues came to Tianhe District, Guangzhou in 2007, and stationed in a simple three- and four-story building, becoming a land reclamation cattle for the founding of the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University.

Wang Lei established sexual function protection surgery technology to reduce the incidence of sexual dysfunction after rectal cancer from 70% to 15%; the treatment of patients with middle and advanced rectal cancer in the past generally refers to the US NCCN guidelines, and first undergo synchronous chemotherapy before surgical resection was performed to establish a pure neoadjuvant chemotherapy plan. After surgery, many patients are prone to radioactive damage and have poor quality of life. For patients who have received radiotherapy, Professor Wang Lei established a unique surgical procedure – proximal enlarged resection of rectal cancer, and named it “Tianhe surgical procedure” after Tianhe District where Zhongshan Sixth Hospital is located. Tianhe surgery reduces the incidence of anastomosis-related complications, reduces the chance of anastomosis fistula in patients and improves quality of life.
In order to further improve the quality of postoperative survival of cancer patients, Wang Lei focused his research on relatively unpopular radioactive enteritis. The incidence of radioactive enteritis in pelvic radiotherapy is as high as about 20%, among which hemorrhagic radioprotic inflammation is coming fiercely and recursively, and the patient is suffering and very painful. A few patients end their pain by suicide.

Wang Lei once posted a notice of “No visit” in front of his ward – he never wanted to show it to others as a patient, and he was even more unwilling to inform his relatives and friends about his condition or show his pain.
Last March, Wang Lei learned about the teacher’s condition and asked for a visit. Some students even took a plane and took a high-speed rail to the hospital. Wang Lei refused to visit at that time, and the text under his hand book: “I don’t need comfort. At this moment, I don’t treat myself as a patient. I treat pancreatic cancer as a friend in my body. I want to learn how to get along with it again.”
Wang Lei once said that he knew that taking gradually increased painkillers will continue to increase their dependence on drugs, and will eventually collapse due to the inability to relieve pain. He longs to prolong and slow down the process, so he chooses to overcome physiological pain in the most painful way – with his will.
At the beginning of Wang Lei’s diagnosis of cancer, the doctors judged that Wang Lei’s life was only 3 months away. As a result, Wang Lei fought against fate for 15 months and was still trying immature advanced pancreatic cancer treatment plans. Wang Lei once admitted that this was because he “can’t let go”.
In the ward, Wang Lei once revealed his thoughts – in the past 27 years of his career, he devoted all his efforts to his medical career and owed his wife and children a lot. Since he got sick, he began to think about the meaning of life and everything around him. He longs to live one more day, spend more time with his family, and make up for his debts to his wife.
In the past 15 months, Wang Lei’s wife has been with him day and night. They took a walk, went to the park together, and went to buy vegetables together. They held hands and felt the daily life carefully. The couple spent more than a year together than the previous 25 years combined.
”Can’t let go” also comes from a lifetime of medical ideals. Wang Lei once admitted that the scientific research on radioactive enteritis has been going through more than ten years, and the team has silently persevered and made efforts. Last year, it was awarded the first prize of the Guangdong Science and Technology Progress Award. Scientific research is at the critical moment. He does not want the progress of the entire team to be affected by his illness. “The clinical field has been cultivated and mature, and the scientific research field still needs a professor with accumulation to lead it..
