In 1969, Wang Lei was born in a medical family in Henan. His parents and grandfather were both prestigious doctors in the county. The home where he grew up is less than 50 meters away from the hospital operating room. Seeing his father, who was a surgeon, save lives and help the wounded, Wang Lei set his future goals in his heart.
In 1987, Wang Lei applied for the Clinical Medicine Department of Zhengzhou University. Although he was later transferred to the major of stomatology, he never gave up on his ideal of becoming a surgeon.
At the end of 1995, Wang Lei and his newlywed wife went south to Guangzhou. They first studied general surgery at the Jinan University Affiliated Hospital. Later, they passed the master’s degree at Sun Yat-sen Medical University and became a student of Wang Jianping, a leader in the field of colorectal surgery in China and the first president of Zhongshan Sixth Hospital. After graduation, he stayed at school to work in the Department of Gastroenterology and Surgery of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. In 2000, Wang Lei studied for a Ph.D.
The pursuit of scientific research has kept Wang Lei in a state of “knowledge hunger”. In September 2001, Wang Lei applied to go to the world’s top cancer hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center, the United States, to engage in postdoctoral research in the field of digestive tract tumors in the Department of Molecular Pathology.
After returning from the US postdoctoral research, Wang Lei and more than 30 colleagues came to Tianhe District, Guangzhou in 2007, and stayed in a simple three- and four-story building, becoming the pioneering cattle for the founding of the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University.
In 2011, Wang Lei was promoted to vice president, and has successively managed scientific research, teaching, personnel, logistics, information and clinical practice.
